Although the majority of dentists’ patients undergo treatment due to periodontological symptoms (such as: gum bleeding, bad breath), these symptoms are often misdiagnosed and treated wrongly. The University Course in Periodontology, which will be launched on 29 February, takes this into account, training 17 specialists in periodontology over a period of 2 years.

To date, periodontology has not been formally recognised as a specialisation in its own right and hence this country brings up the rear in that field in an international comparison. This also reflects in the training of dentists. This specialisation is still covered by other dental disciplines. An exception is the Medical University of Vienna, which has been maintaining its own Division of Periodontology at Bernhard Gottlieb University Dental Clinic since 2001. Explains Univ. Prof. DDr. Michael Matejka, scientific head of the new postgraduate university course with the title Paromaster: “Insecurity about diagnosis and therapy options among established dentists often abounds and results in insufficient care for patients suffering from periodontal diseases.”

In his capacity as the Head of the Periodontology Division at the University Clinic he demands that this specialisation be given a more central role in the specialist and further education of dentists with lasting effect. “The recognition of periodontology as a dental specialisation in Austria within the framework of the Law on Medical Doctors would save dentists and patients much time, suffering and ultimately money.

The strengthening of the specialisation would make prophylaxis easier and improve treatment. Successful treatment can be guaranteed first and foremost by specialists who are able to diagnose correctly and introduce the appropriate therapy.

Medical University of Vienna Postgraduate Course in Periodontology

The only university course in periodontology to be recognised by specialist society.
The new university course is the only one in the specialisation to be recognised by the Austrian Society of Periodontology (ÖGP) in this country. Graduates obtain 60 ECTS points. For ÖGP President Dr. Wolfgang Müller this represents a major step towards making the specialisation official. “We know from studies conducted in Germany that the majority of patients visits the dentist for periodontal reasons. In Austria the situation is similar, with the additional shortcoming that no specialist training has to date been established.

This backlog demand is now tackled with the course for the first time – against a traditionally university-based background and employing international experts. Also the Federal Ministry for Health, Family and Youth supports the University’s efforts to include periodontology as an important element into the specialist and further education of dentists. “We know that dental health constitutes a major element of an individual’s overall healthy state.
Therefore we warmly welcome this initiative by the Medical University of Vienna and the Division of Periodontology to train specialists for this vital part of dental medicine,”Medical University of Vienna to Launch Postgraduate University Course in Periodontology.
